INFO: What versions of Office documents can be unpacked and scanned?

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • MailMarshal (SEG)
  • MailMarshal ECM/MailMarshal Exchange

Question:

  • Are Office 2007 and 2003 documents supported by MailMarshal SMTP and MailMarshal Exchange?

Information:

Microsoft Office 2007 (and later versions)

  • MailMarshal (SEG) version 6.4 and above correctly identifies and scans Office 2007 documents.
  • MailMarshal ECM/MailMarshal Exchange version 5.2 and above correctly identifies and scans Office 2007 documents.

"Office 2007" format is used by all later versions of Office.

Earlier versions of MailMarshal SMTP, and MailMarshal Exchange version 5.x, are not able to detect Microsoft Office 2007 docs correctly as type "document". The files are detected as .ZIP archives, which is a correct identification of the file structure. The files are unpacked properly, and content within them is scanned.

Microsoft Office 2007 documents, saved in Office 2003 format.

The following limitations apply for this specific format

  • PowerPoint files saved in Office 2003 format by later versions cannot be TextCensored.
  • Note that MailMarshal SMTP 6.4.0 and MailMarshal Exchange 5.1 cannot apply TextCensor to some Office 2007 file types.

Microsoft Office 2003

The following limitations apply for this format:

  • Some images contained within an Excel or PowerPoint document are not extracted.
  • Note that MailMarshal Exchange 5.1 cannot apply TextCensoring to Excel or PowerPoint files.
