FAQ: Is MailMarshal a virus scanner?

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • MailMarshal ECM/MailMarshal Exchange
  • MailMarshal (SEG)

Question:

Is MailMarshal a virus scanner?

Reply:

MailMarshal is not a traditional virus scanner itself. MailMarshal performs virus scanning by invoking third party scanners. Other technologies available in some MailMarshal versions, such as the SpamCensor/Known Threats, AMAX, and Blended Threat Module, provide additional lines of defense. Virus prevention can also be assisted by scanning email for specific file names and file types, and for specific words, phrases and commands associated with virus threats.

When set up using best practices, MailMarshal often stops new viruses before virus scanner updates have been issued.
