PRB: Unable to receive email from Lotus Notes servers

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • MailMarshal (SEG)
  • Lotus Notes Email Client

Symptoms:

  • Unable to receive e-mail from Lotus Notes servers.

  • Recipient e-mail addresses containing '@domain' (suffix), '%' (percent sign), or '!' (exclamation point) are blocked by MailMarshal.
  • Error: '501 Badly formatted mail from' is displayed in MailMarshal Receiver log.

Causes:

A specially formatted Recipient field may be interpreted by some e-mail systems as a relay instruction. This may appear as an embedded standard e-mail address within quotes ("user@domain"@domain), or an embedded '%' or '!' character in the user name.

Information:

If this function is handled correctly by other servers in your environment and you wish to accept these messages, follow the steps below to configure MailMarshal appropriately:

  1. In the MailMarshal configuration interface, navigate to Array Properties) | Receiver Properties | Host Validation. (Location may differ in earlier versions)
  2. Uncheck:  Block suspicious local-part relay attempt.
  3. Commit configuration changes.
