HOWTO: Creating a TextCensor script that checks for non-Roman character sets

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • MailMarshal (SEG)
  • MailMarshal ECM/MailMarshal Exchange

Question:

  • How to create a TextCensor script that checks for "foreign" or non-Western European characters

Procedure:

A TextCensor script that checks email for foreign character sets (not standard Roman) is present by default in SEG. To obtain the latest version:

  1. Download the character sets script from the sample scripts page (login required).
  2. Unzip the archive file.
  3. Follow the steps described in the included text file to create or update the script.
  4. The script checks the header of an email for the character set used to display the message in the email client.
  5. You can customize the script to include specific character sets.
  6. The TextCensor script can be included in a rule to quarantine email that uses these character sets.

You can also use the ideas in this script to create a Category Script TextCensor, for instance to add weight to your SpamCensor scoring for email using specific character sets.
