INFO: Message Digest fails to display correctly on an iPhone or iPad

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • MailMarshal (SEG)
  • MailMarshal ECM/MailMarshal Exchange 7.X
  • iPhone and iPad running iOS current versions
  • Message Digest functionality

Question:

  • Why does a Message Digest not display correctly on an iPhone or iPad?

Response:

  • Message digests created by the named versions of MailMarshal are encoded in UTF-7. Apple iOS has removed support for UTF-7 due to a security issue in the operating system. Thus the digests do not render correctly.

Workaround

If you find that digests are affected by this problem, you can work around the issue in one of the following ways:

  • A forwarded or replied to digest is displayed correctly. You can view the digests by forwarding to yourself.
  • You can disable use of UTF-7 for message digests as detailed in LevelBlue Knowledgebase article Q12131. Please note that this change will prevent Unicode characters from rendering on other devices or clients. This will only affect new message digests. Existing digests will not display correctly (use first workaround for existing digests)

Notes:

If you are encountering this issue, please log a support ticket so that LevelBlue can better gauge the number of users affected.
