ERRMSG: ASN1_verify:unknown message digest algorithm

This article applies to:

  • MailMarshal (SEG) 6.X
  • MailMarshal ECM/MailMarshal Exchange/MailMarshal ECM 7.X
  • Automatic updates/SpamCensor updates

Symptoms:

  • Error message reported by automatic update: 0D890A1: asn1 encoding routines:ASN1_verify:unknown message digest algorithm

Causes:

  • The update server is secured with a SHA-256 signed certificate as required by current best security practices. The affected product versions use an older SSL package that does not recognize this certificate.
  • Note that all affected versions of MailMarshal SMTP are unsupported and no automatic updates are available for these versions in any case.

Resolution:

  • For MailMarshal (SEG), to resolve this issue, upgrade to a current supported version of SEG.
  • For MailMarshal ECM/MailMarshal Exchange, to resolve this issue, upgrade to version 7.2.0 or above.
