HOWTO: Moving the Marshal Interface Agent

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • MailMarshal SPE 3.6 and above

Question:

  • How do I move the Marshal Interface Agent component of SPE to a different server?

Procedure:

Marshal Interface Agent (MIA) handles communication between all SPE components and the database, as well as report generation. MIA can be installed separately or with other SPE components.

Behavior in SPE 4.0 and above

SPE 4.0 includes a protection against running two copies of MIA, to avoid duplicate reports and other unwanted behaviors. The new instance of MIA will not start until the previous instance has been stopped for more than 60 minutes.

  1. Stop the existing MIA service. Do not uninstall it.
  2. Install MIA (and any other required components) in the new location.
    • Use the existing database.
    • Verify required ports are available between MIA and other components. Connectivity requirements vary with the version of SPE. Consult the Administrator Guide.
    • Ensure MIA is running.
      • Note: MIA will not start until the previous instance has been stopped for more than 60 minutes.
  3. On all other servers in the installation run the Client Settings application.
    • Set the URL to the new location, and register the client. You may need to accept an untrusted certificate.
  4. Uninstall MIA from the old location.
    • If you are retaining other components on the old server, after modifying the installation to remove MIA, run the Client Settings application and register with the new MIA.

Behavior in SPE 3.8 and below

To move the MIA service to another server:

  1. Stop the existing MIA service.
  2. Install MIA (and any other required components) in the new location.
    • Use the existing database.
    • Verify required ports are available between MIA and other components. Connectivity requirements vary with the version of SPE. Consult the Administrator Guide.
    • Ensure MIA is running.
  3. On all other servers in the installation run the Client Settings application (found in the Start menu under SPE). Set the URL to the new location, and register the client.
  4. Uninstall MIA from the old location.
    • If you are retaining other components on the old server, after modifying the installation to remove MIA, run the Client Settings application and register with the new MIA.
