HOWTO: Updating .NET on SPE servers

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • MailMarshal SPE (supported versions)

Question:

  • How do I update the .NET redistributable on MailMarshal SPE servers and MailMarshal Array Managers?
  • What version of .NET is used by MailMarshal SPE?
  • Can I remove older versions of the .NET redistributable?

Versions used:

MailMarshal installs .NET on the SPE MIA/Console server and the MailMarshal Array Manager server.
The major version of .NET installed is the only supported major version for each MailMarshal release.
  • MailMarshal SPE 5.X and the supported MailMarshal SMTP versions use .NET 8

Procedure:

To update .NET:

  1. Browse to the .NET download page https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet/
  2. Select the correct version for your MailMarshal release (8.0).
  3. Download the latest version of the Hosting Bundle and the .NET Desktop Runtime.
  4. On the SPE Marshal Interface Agent and Console servers (usually the same server)
    1. Stop the MIA service.
    2. Update the .NET Desktop Runtime, and the Hosting Bundle if it was present.
    3. Restart IIS if present.
    4. Start the MIA service.
  5. On the Array Manager server:
    1. Stop the Array Manager service and RPC Proxy service (if present).
    2. Update the .NET Desktop Runtime
    3. Start the Array Manager service and RPC Proxy.

Notes:

  • If you have set Windows Update to retrieve updates for additional products, the .NET packages will be updated automatically. However, this might not happen immediately. In case of urgent security issues, it is best to perform the update manually.
  • You can uninstall older versions of .NET. Before uninstalling older major versions, ensure that no other software on the server requires them.
  • Earlier unsupported versions of SPE use unsupported versions of .NET. No updates for older .NET versions are provided by Microsoft.
