FAQ: How do you allow access to particular website while keeping its URL category blocked ?

Expand / Collapse

  • Question

Vital Security for Web provides a flexible set of policy rules that take actions based on various content types.

A user may want to set blocking for a specific URL category; for example, web-based mail services.
It may be necessary however, to make exceptions for users required to use web-based mail for business.

This article describes how to allow access to Gmail web-based mail without allowing access to the global web-based mail category.

  • Answer

A single rule in a Finjan policy takes a specific action (allow/block/coach) based on the condition(s) set for this particular rule.

There may be more than one condition for a rule. This logic helps us reach the correct combination of conditions to allow access to Gmail.

One of required conditions is for content to belong to a specific URL category. In this case, web-based email:

Another required condition is that the content is sent or received from the URL listed in a 'White List':

The Action set by this rule is taken only if the content meets both conditions.
Thus, whole web-mail categories may still be blocked globally while allowing specific user(s) to access Gmail.
