HOWTO: How do I configure NTP synchronization?

This article applies to:

  • Secure Web Gateway
  • Limited Shell
  • NTP (Network Time Protocol)

Question:

  • What is the best way to have correct time stamps in the log files?
  • How do I configure NTP synchronization?

Procedure:

Connect to the limited shell via SSH. Use the command "config_time":

Use "help" to show list of available commands, "quit" to exit.
> config_time

Current configuration:
Date:                2010-08-20 14:57
Time zone:           Europe/Berlin
NTP Server:          None
Would you like to change settings? [y/N] y

Time and Date configuration
1. Date and Time
2. Time zone
3. NTP server
Type Q to quit the menu
timecfg > 3
Type in NTP server or Q to exit:  de.pool.ntp.org

Time and Date configuration
1. Date and Time
2. Time zone
3. NTP server
Type Q to quit the menu
timecfg > q
All files invalidated successfully.

Without an error message after this process, everything is set correctly.

Notes:

Make sure that UDP traffic to port 123 (NTP) is permitted.

In case of the following error message, check if the NTP server is actually correct:

Type in NTP server or Q to exit:  1.2.3.4  (incorrect IP)
Error: 20 Aug 15:07:08 ntpdate[21123]: no server suitable for synchronization found
Type in NTP server or Q to exit:
